The team formerly known as the Washington Redskins announced on Thursday that
they will be known as the "Washington Football Team" until a permanent name is
selected. They hope to have all of the mentions of Redskins scrubbed by the
season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The team is, for now anyway, keeping the franchise's color scheme and will have
the retired logo on the helmet replaced with the player's number.

Effective immediately, Washington will call itself the “Washington Football
Team”, pending adoption of a new name, sources tell ESPN.

This is not a final renaming and rebranding for team; this is the name it wants
to use until pending adoption of a new name in the future.

The Washington Football Team will continue the process of retiring the Redskins
name and hopes to be entirely rid of it on physical and digital spaces in the
next 50 days, by the Sept. 13 regular-season opener against the Eagles.

Washington said fans will be able to purchase “Washington Football Team”
merchandise from Fanatics and NFL Shop in the coming days.

So what's taking so long to pick a new name, probably the asshole who filed for
trademarks of all of the new name ideas. The team formerly known as the
Washington Redskins hasn't come out and said that, but that's probably a pretty
good guess.

I thought that guy said he was letting them use those names he had
trademarked free of charge. Or at least one of them, I believe it was
"Redtails" (which could have required a public education campaign about
where the hell "Redtails" comes from they didn't want be involved in).
